เป็นศาลหลวงที่ทรงสร้างโดยพระราชดำริของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว จัดตั้งเมื่อวันศุกร์ที่ 29 ตุลาคม 2547 และประกอบพิธีบวงสรวงอัญเชิญเทพารักษ์ขึ้นประดิษฐ์ฐาน ณ ศาลต้นไทร โดย ดร.สุเมธ ตันติเวชกุล กรรมการและเลขานุการมูลนิธิชัยพัฒนา เป็นประธานในพิธีฯ ศาลต้นไทรสร้างด้วยไม้สักทั้งหลัง บริเวณโดยรอบปูด้วยหินอ่อนและมีการจัดสภาพภูมิทัศที่สวยงาม ตั้งอยู่ริมแม่น้ำชะอวดแพรกเมือง ซึ่งมีทัศนียภาพที่สวยงามมาก คงไม่มีใครใน จ.นครศรีธรรมราช ที่จะไม่รู้จัก ศาลหลวงต้นไทร โดยเฉพาะคนใน อ.เชียรใหญ่ และ อ.หัวไทร ซึ่งเป็นพื้นที่โครงการพัฒนาพื้นที่ลุ่มน้ำปากพนังอันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดำริ ที่ต่างร่ำลือถึงกิตติศัพท์ของความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ขณะก่อสร้างโครงการเมื่อหลายปีก่อน โดยเฉพาะการขุดคลองระบายน้ำชะอวด-แพรกเมือง หมู่ 12 ต.การะเกด อ.เชียรใหญ่ ที่ต้องหยุดชะงักไปพักใหญ่ เพราะเครื่องยนต์ของเรือขุด และรถแบ็กโฮ จะดับทุกครั้งที่เข้าไปใกล้ต้นไทรใหญ่ ทั้งยังมีคนงานล้มป่วยโดยไม่ทราบสาเหตุอีกด้วย!! ชาวบ้านที่นั่นต่างเชื่อว่า สาเหตุของเรื่องราวประหลาดดังกล่าวเกิดจาก "อาถรรพณ์" ของต้นไทร โดยบริเวณใต้ต้นไทรยังขุดพบซากกระดูกมนุษย์ และสัตว์ใหญ่ต่างๆ รวมทั้งเปลือกหอยทะเล เมื่อชาวบ้านทราบข่าวก็พากันไปกราบไหว้ต้นไทรกันเป็นจำนวนมาก ต่อมา พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เสด็จพระราชดำเนินพร้อมด้วย สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี มา ณ แปลงปลูกป่าชายเลนเฉลิมพระเกียรติของบริษัท ปตท. จำกัด (มหาชน) อ.ปราณบุรี จ.ประจวบคีรีขันธ์ เมื่อวันที่ 16 พฤศจิกายน 2545 ครั้งนั้น นายจำนูญ พลายด้วง ชาวบ้าน ต.แม่เจ้าอยู่หัว อ.เชียรใหญ่ ได้รับพระมหากรุณาธิคุณพระราชทานพระบรมราชวโรกาสให้เข้าเฝ้าฯ และได้กราบบังคมทูลพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวถึงต้นไทรโบราณขนาดใหญ่ที่ขึ้นขวางแนวขุดคลองชะอวด-แพรกเมือง นายจำรูญ กราบบังคมทูลถึงเรื่องราวประหลาดที่เครื่องยนต์ขนาดใหญ่จะดับทุกครั้งเมื่อขับเคลื่อนมาถึงต้นไทร และเมื่อมีชาวบ้านมาตั้งเครื่องเซ่นไหว้ และขอโชคลาภก็สมปรารถนาในสิ่งที่ขอ จึงมีความเชื่อว่าต้นไทรต้นนั้นเป็นต้นไทรศักดิ์สิทธิ์ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวจึงมีพระราชดำริให้ ดร.สุเมธ ตันติเวชกุล กรรมการและเลขานุการมูลนิธิชัยพัฒนา ไปดำเนินการจัดสร้างศาลหลวงขึ้นตามโบราณราชประเพณี ต่อมา สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี พระราชทานงบประมาณให้แก่มูลนิธิชัยพัฒนาดำเนินการก่อสร้างศาลขึ้น โดยมี นาวาอากาศเอก อาวุธ เงินชูกลิ่น อดีตอธิบดีกรมศิลปากร เป็นผู้ออกแบบ เมื่อจัดสร้างแล้วเสร็จ มูลนิธิชัยพัฒนาได้ประสานกองพระราชพิธี สำนักพระราชวัง คำนวณฤกษ์ศุภมงคลการพิธีตั้งศาลตามฤกษ์ โดยมีพราหมณ์หลวงเป็นผู้ประกอบพิธีหลวง เมื่อวันศุกร์ที่ 29 ตุลาคม 2547 เวลา 10.09 น. ตั้งแต่นั้นเรื่อยมา ศาลหลวงต้นไทร จึงเป็นที่เคารพสักการะของชาวลุ่มน้ำปากพนัง ทั้งยังเป็นอนุสรณ์แห่งพระมหากรุณาธิคุณของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว อีกด้วย ศาลหลวงต้นไทรยังถือเป็นสถานที่ยอดนิยมในพื้นที่ และเป็นสัญลักษณ์อีกอย่างของโครงการพัฒนาลุ่มน้ำปากพนังฯ จากภูมิทัศน์ที่สวยงาม แปลกตา และต้นไทรขนาดใหญ่ที่ยืนต้นตระหง่านอยู่กลางลำน้ำ ด้วยเหตุนี้ ในวันหยุดยาวจะมีนักท่องเที่ยวทั้งชาวไทยและชาวต่างประทศ โดยเฉพาะชาวสิงคโปร์ และมาเลเซีย เดินทางมากราบไหว้ศาลต้นไทรเป็นจำนวนมาก เพราะเชื่อในความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ การให้โชคลาภ และให้คุ้มครองในการเดินทางด้วย ศาลหลวงต้นไทร จึงเป็นทั้งศูนย์รวมจิตใจของชาวลุ่มน้ำปากพนัง และเป็นอนุสรณ์แห่งพระมหากรุณาธิคุณแห่งสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์ที่ทรงรักและห่วงใยพสกนิกรของพระองค์ท่านอย่างหาที่สุดมิได้ ด้วยความสำนึกในพระมหากรุณาธิคุณเป็นล้นพ้น ชาว อ.เชียรใหญ่ และคนในลุ่มน้ำปากพนัง จึงร่วมกันจัดงานสักการะศาลหลวงต้นไทรศักดิ์สิทธิ์เพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคลในช่วงเทศกาลสงกรานต์เป็นประจำทุกปี
